MBA Program for Physicians and Dentists
Dr. Jim Hoffman, Director

The Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University is currently offering an MBA program taught in an executive format designed specifically for physicians and dentists (including optometrists and podiatrists). The purpose of our MBA program is to assist physicians and dentists in developing business skills so they have the knowledge to strategically position their organizations to succeed in today’s ever-changing healthcare environment. What differentiates Texas Tech University’s MBA Program from other programs is its focus on teaching physicians and dentists how to better manage their practices and healthcare organizations (e.g., how to simultaneously increase revenue, decrease costs, and decrease risk). Although the curriculum in the Texas Tech program covers many traditional elements of an MBA program, other courses focus specifically on the healthcare industry. For example, the operations management class at Tech covers patient flow, billing and collection processes, and productivity.
Currently, we have 35 doctors in our program. All of the doctors started the program during August 2007 and are scheduled to graduate in August 2009. Our next class will begin the weekend of August 29 and 30, 2009 (we have a new group of doctors start every other fall semester). The MBA Program for Physicians and Dentists is a fully accredited MBA program that has been consistently ranked as a top 20 Physician MBA program by Modern Physician. The program consists of 36 semester hours of coursework that focus on the managerial, financial, and technical aspects of competing successfully in today’s turbulent healthcare environment. The program takes 24 months to complete. Classes are taught in an executive format and participants attend classes that meet one weekend a month on Saturdays and Sundays. Classes meet from 12:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. This schedule will allow participants to fly to Lubbock on Saturday morning from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and other cities and return home by Sunday evening. Additionally, all class meetings are videotaped and sent to participants on DVD.
The total cost for the MBA Program for Physicians and Dentists is $35,000 for residents of the state of Texas and $45,000 for non-residents of Texas, plus a $50 application fee. The cost includes everything except travel and/or lodging costs associated with the program. An advanced fee of $1,000 (non-refundable after August 15, 2009) is required upon application. The remainder of the cost is divided into six approximately equal increments that are due once every four months over the course of the program. An individual must be a licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, or optometrist to gain admission. The Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is not a requirement for admission.
